Residents of South Holland are being encouraged to share what makes their town's high street special this week, as South Holland District Council support Great British High Street Week.

Occupancy rates of retail units across the district remain well above the national average, bucking a general trend across the country for increasingly empty high streets and town centres. With this in mind, the council are this week urging people to share photographs and highlights from their high street to be in with a chance of winning tickets to a cinema screening of their choice at the South Holland Centre.

Entries can cover Spalding, Holbeach, Crowland, Donington, Long Sutton or Sutton Bridge, and joins a national movement aiming to celebrate high streets and showcase the dedicated businesses and individuals in towns up and down the country.

In Spalding, Charmed Interiors opened on July 14 in the unit previously occupied by Store Twenty One, whilst Robert Goddard will be moving into the former Revills Jewellers shop. Shops have clubbed together to display their support of England at the World Cup through flags and other displays in their frontage, whilst maintenance work has begun at the South Holland Centre to help it continue as a prime entertainment venue right on the high street.

In the past few weeks and months Holbeach has seen a new restaurant, Polka Polish, and charity Chosen open their second shop, with a gym and community bookshop also on the way. Shops have also joined together for a First World War commemoration theme whilst several of the district's high streets have embraced recent In Bloom competitions.

Town centre markets also remain a key aspect of the district's economy, with six markets taking place every week across Spalding, Crowland, Holbeach and Long Sutton.

Deputy Leader Nick Worth, portfolio holder for growth and commercialisation said: "The high street remains such an integral part of any town or city's culture and economy, and South Holland is no exception to that."

"Our towns are all so different in the attractions and environment they have to offer, and the people and businesses who help support them deserve recognition. Great British High Street Week is a great opportunity to do this and I can't wait to hear what the district's residents value in their town centres and high streets."
