VJ Day 80 Anniversary - Flag Raising
VJ Day 80 Flag Raising Ceremony at South Holland District Council Offices

On 15 August 2025, South Holland District Council proudly marked the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) with a heartfelt flag raising ceremony held outside the Council offices in Spalding.

The event was led by Chairlady Councillor Jan Whitbourn, who raised the commemorative flag in the presence of fellow councillors, veterans, and members of the public. It was a beautifully intimate gathering, filled with reflection, gratitude, and community spirit.

In her speech, the Chairlady paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who served in the Far East during the Second World War:"Today we remember the bravery of those who fought in the most challenging conditions, far from home, and often overlooked in the broader narrative of the war. VJ Day reminds us of the cost of peace and the importance of honouring every individual who contributed to securing it. As we raise this flag, we do so in memory of those who never returned, in gratitude to those who did, and in commitment to ensuring their stories are never forgotten."

The ceremony created a warm and respectful atmosphere, with attendees sharing quiet moments of reflection and appreciation. Veterans present were visibly moved, and many expressed their thanks for the Council's continued recognition of their service.

The Council extends its sincere thanks to all who attended and contributed to making the event so meaningful.
