VJ 80 Anniversary - Parade and Service of Thanksgiving and Reflection
On Sunday 17th August 2025, South Holland District Council Chairlady, Councillor Jan Whitbourn, joined the Royal British Legion and the local community at St Mary and St Nicolas Church, Spalding, to mark the 80th Anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ Day) with a moving Service of Thanksgiving and Reflection.

The service honoured the courage and sacrifice of those who served in the Far East during the Second World War, including the 71,000 British and Commonwealth personnel who lost their lives, and the thousands more who endured unimaginable hardship as prisoners of war.

Led by The Revd Robert Parker-McGee, the service began with a solemn Processional Entry, followed by hymns, prayers, and readings that reflected on the cost of war and the enduring hope for peace.

The Act of Remembrance, including the Last Post, a minute's silence, and the Kohima Epitaph, offered a poignant moment to remember those who gave their lives "for our tomorrow."

Chairlady Councillor Jan Whitbourn BEM gave a heartfelt reading from Matthew 25:31-40, reminding us of the importance of compassion, service, and community.

Her presence and contribution reflected the Council's deep respect for those who served and its commitment to honouring their legacy.

The service concluded with an Act of Commitment, a blessing, and the singing of the National Anthem, followed by a Guard of Honour formed by the Standards at the church door.

Guests were invited to continue the commemoration with refreshments and entertainment in Vista Hall, where the spirit of community and remembrance continued.

The church collection was shared between the Chairlady's chosen charities: Spalding Lions and Spalding Round Table, supporting local causes close to the heart of the district.

The Chairlady wishes to thank all those who attended this special occasion, with heartfelt appreciation to the Royal British Legion and the cadets for their dedication and support.
