Chairlady's Race Night Raises Over £1,700 for Charity
A thrilling evening at the Welland Yacht Club saw guests take a gamble for a good cause, raising more than £1,700 for charity at the Chairlady's Race Night on Friday, 1 August 2025.

Councillor Jan Whitbourn, Chairlady of South Holland District Council, hosted her first fundraising event in support of her chosen charity, Spalding Lions. The night was filled with excitement, camaraderie, and generosity, as attendees placed bets on nine simulated horse races sponsored by local businesses.

"To say I was thrilled with the evening is an understatement," said Councillor Whitbourn. "It was truly an evening of fun and purpose to raise funds for my cherished local charity."
Guests had the chance to win prizes as they cheered on their favourite horses, with many contributing by sponsoring races, buying horses, or donating funds to take part. A lively raffle added to the fundraising total, offering prizes such as wine, flowers, and baskets of fresh fruit and vegetables.

"The excitement of watching the races unfold paired with the friendly competition guaranteed a lovely and entertaining experience," she added. "It was amazing and a night to remember."
"During my time at the council I would like to help as many local groups as I can, make a difference, and hopefully make people smile," said Councillor Whitbourn. "I've chosen to raise funds for local groups for a bite of the cherry."

Special thanks were extended to Sarah, Commodore of the Yacht Club, along with Andy and the club's dedicated committee, for their hard work and support in making the evening a success.

"They were truly amazing, worked so hard and couldn't do enough for me," said Councillor Whitbourn.
