D-Day Union Flag Raising Ceremony Speech
By Councillor Jan Whitbourn, Chairman of SHDC and Veterans' Champion

Good morning everyone,
It is both a privilege and a solemn honour to stand before you today as we raise the Union Flag in remembrance of D-Day.
On this day, we pause to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering determination of the Allied forces who, on 6 June 1944, launched the largest seaborne invasion in history. Their bravery
on the beaches of Normandy marked a turning point in the Second World War and paved the way for the liberation of Europe from tyranny.
As Chairman of South Holland District Council, and as the Council's Veterans' Champion, I am deeply proud to represent a community that continues to honour the legacy of our servicemen and women.
Today, we remember not only those who fought and fell on D-Day, but all who have served-and continue to serve-our country with distinction.
Let this flag serve as a symbol of our enduring gratitude and respect. May it remind us of the freedoms we enjoy today, hard-won by those who came before us.
Thank you for joining us in this act of remembrance.

D Day 7

The Chairman then went on to attend the RNA commemoration service at Ayscoughfee Gardens.
