Council creates new ways for residents to get in harvest spirit this October with new competitions
Posted on 6 October 2020
There may not be the usual Pumpkin Festival and other harvest festivities this year due to the impact of COVID-19 on events, but South Holland District Council has still created a host of new fun activities and competitions for families to get involved with this October.
The first of these will be the Harvest Time Trail taking place around Spalding town centre from the 10-31 October. Ten businesses around the centre will be incorporating scarecrows into their front window displays throughout the period, with anyone able to find all ten being entered into a prize draw to be one of three lucky winners of some great prizes.
Residents who prefer to stay at home can still get involved in the festivities with a Pumpkin Pets Photo online competition. They simply need to take an autumnal or harvest themed photograph with their animals and send it into the Council for the chance to win a £50 Rookes Pet Products voucher. Entries can be as inventive as the pets will allow and a shortlist will be drawn up before going to a public vote on the SHDC Communities Facebook page. The competition opens for entries on Friday 9 October and closes on the 23rd.
Finally, the team will have some fantastic interactive activities to get involved with from their Facebook page, including a pumpkin carving demonstration by BBC featured local artist Jonathan Nicolls, healthy recipe ideas inspired by the wide variety of Lincolnshire produce, some harvest themed home decorations and craft ideas and lots more.
Councillor Gary Taylor, portfolio holder for communities and facilities said:
"The pumpkin festival is always a highlight of the calendar in South Holland, and it is a real shame that it isn't possible for it to take place as normal this year. However, the range of different events and activities our communities team are offering instead will hopefully still give everyone a chance to get involved and get a bit of harvest happiness going in their household.
"So whether it's searching for scarecrows in Spalding or persuading your pets to pose with a pumpkin, I look forward to seeing plenty of people getting involved in the fun and seeing what fantastic creations people are able to come up with to celebrate this important period together."
