How we provide this service

Information about air handling units pollution control is supported by Environmental Services, Safety & Environment.

Part IV of the Environment Act 1995 places a statutory duty on local authorities to review and assess the air quality within their area and take account of Government Guidance when undertaking such work.

South Holland District Council monitors air quality within the district using:

  • 14 diffusion tubes located around the district which measure Nitrogen Oxides from traffic emissions. These are changed monthly and sent away for analysis.
  • Continuous monitoring at Sutton Bridge of Nitrogen Oxides, Ozone and Particulate Matter (PM10)
  • Continuous monitoring at Spalding of Nitrogen Oxides, Ozone and Particulate Matter (PM10)

Results of this monitoring are used in the District's Review and Assessment of Local Air Quality. The Council has carried out 3 Reviews & Assessments so far and are currently on the fourth round. Further details of these reports may be obtained from the Safety and Environment Team at the Council.

Data collected from our continuous monitoring sites is ratified by our consultants at The National Environmental Technology Centre (NETCEN) a division of AEA Technology plc.

Details on recorded levels in South Holland and general air quality information is available here (South Holland District Council is not responsible for the content of external websites).
