Food business - food safety inspections
How we provide this service
Food safety inspections in business - is supported by Community & Neighbourhood Services, Food Safety.
Food safety inspections are carried out to ensure that food produced and consumed is hygienically prepared, safe and wholesome. The Food Safety Team at South Holland carries out approximately 1500 inspections every year.
The Food Safety team inspects all food businesses, except slaughterhouses, and meat cutting plants which are the responsibility of the Meat Hygiene Service.
Visits may be carried out at any reasonable time during the day or evening when the business is operating. These are normally unannounced.
During an inspection, officers will want to reassure themselves that potential food safety risks have been identified by the business, and that there are adequate controls in place to prevent any problems. They will also look at the training of managers and food handlers to ensure that it is suitable, and they will check that the condition of the premises and equipment are satisfactory.
Where practices or conditions are not satisfactory, every attempt will be made to resolve the situation by informal means, but where poor conditions persist, or where there is a risk to public health it may be necessary to resort to formal action. This could involve either the service of legal notices, prosecution, or in extreme cases closure of the business.
