How we provide this service

Waste minimisation and recycling is supported by Community & Neighbourhood Services, Waste Services.

Waste Minimisation and Recycling

On average, everyone in the UK throws away their own body weight in rubbish every seven weeks. In South Holland this rate is improving, however we can all help ease the problem by reducing the amount we throw away in the first place and recycling as much materials as we can.

By reducing the amount of waste we all throw away we are helping to save natural resources, reduce extraction, reduce energy-use and reduce the use of landfill.

Here are some of the ways you may prevent waste:

1.Reduce unwanted addressed mail

Register with the Mailing Preference Service to reduce unwanted addressed marketing mail. Your name and address will be removed from up to 95% of direct marketing lists. You can also register previous occupiers.
Telephone: 0845 703 4599
Email: mps@dma.org.uk
Website: www.mpsonline.org.uk
Write to: Mailing Preference Service, FREEPOST29 (LON20771) London W1E 0ZT
Once you have registered with the Mail Preference Service it could take up to 4 months to have a full effect. You will still receive mail from companies that you specifically have dealings with e.g. insurance companies. If you want to stop mail from these organisations contact them directly and request to be removed from their database.

2. Start Home Composting today

The Recycle Now Home Composting Campaign is a government funded scheme to encourage people to reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfill. To find out how you can take advantage of the subsidised scheme in Lincolnshire and start home composting today, please follow the related links at the bottom of this page.

3. The Lincolnshire Real Nappy Campaign

Disposable nappies take several hundred years to decompose in landfill sites. Real nappies have undergone a transformation and are not only an environmentally sound alternative but are now much easier to use and wash. To find out more about them you can view the Real Nappy Campaign website

4. Reduce the use of plastic carrier bags

Say NO to unwanted bags. Re-use plastic carrier bags or use a bag-for-life instead.

5. Support Furniture Re-Use Schemes

South Holland Community Furniture Recycling Project welcomes donations of furniture and household goods of sufficient quality for reuse by households in need. If you think you may have such items please call 01775 711171 Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

6. Recycle, Recycle, Recycle

100% of the South Holland District is now on a kerbside recycling route and collections have moved from strength to strength. But where is it taken once it leaves your kerbside?

7. Old CDs, VHS tapes and floppy discs.

Currently we cannot accept CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes or floppy discs as part of the kerbside recycling collections. However these materials can be sent away for recycling.

The Recycling People are able to accept these items for recycling.
Please call them on 01989 566288 for more details.
