How we provide this service

Information and advice about rabies protection is supported by Community & Neighbourhood Services, Food Safety & Licensing.

The UK has been completely rabies free for many years and there are well prepared contingency plans for dealing with any possible outbreak.

What to do to get this service

Responsibility

Responsibility for dealing with cases of rabies in animals lies with the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

Environmental Health is responsibility for dealing with cases of rabies in humans.

Contingency arrangements and the Rabies Contingency Plan for Lincolnshire is coordinated by Lincolnshire County Council.

Notification

The first alerting to a suspected case of rabies is likely to come from a veterinary surgeon or a member of the public reporting a suspect animal to either the Police, Council or DEFRA.
