What to do to get this service continued
The Government recognises that Business Rates are a heavier financial burden for small businesses than they are for larger ones. It therefore introduced a Small Business Rate Relief Scheme from 1 April 2005.
What Businesses will qualify?
Any Business property (sometimes referred to as a ('hereditament') with a Rateable Value (RV) of less than £10,000 and that either only occupies one property anywhere in England or occupies more than one property, with the main property having a RV of less than £10,000, and the others each with a RV of less than £2200 and where the aggregate RV of ALL properties is less than £15,000. In this second scenario, relief will only be applied to the main property. Un-occupied properties are NOT part of this consideration neither can small business rate relief be awarded on an empty property.
The Government has decided that this is a Self-Funding Scheme and that the relief awarded will be funded by charging a supplement to businesses that are outside the new scheme. For the financial year starting 1 April 2008, this supplement is £0.004 per £ of RV.
To qualify, the hereditament's RV must satisfy the qualifying criteria on 1st April of the year in which the business is applying for the relief.
Who can apply?
Any Business that satisfies the above criteria.
How long will I have to wait for a response?
Any Business which applies for and is entitled to Small Business Rate Relief will have their entitlement shown on their annual bill which is issued in March. Businesses who apply and do not qualify will be notified straight away. Businesses that apply within the year will normally be notified within 10 working days of their application being received.
How long will the whole process take?
Most matters are dealt with within 10 working days of us receiving the information.

Common Questions
Q. Do I have to re-apply every year
A. The application will not need to be renewed until the next revaluation of business properties (1 April 2010). However, changes in circumstances will need to be notified to the local authority - occupation of an additional property or a change in the rateable value. You must notify of any change within 4 weeks of the change or you will lose entitlement to the relief.
