Business Rates Relief Schemes

How we provide this service

Rate relief - available to some Charities, Non-Profit Making Organisations, Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASC) and Rural Businesses - this is supported by Finance, Rating and Recovery.

If the rateable occupier is a registered charity they can complete an application form for relief.

The mandatory relief available to a registered charity is 80%.

In some circumstances discretionary relief can also be awarded.

Information on how to register as a CASC is available from HM Revenue & Customs.

Any business applying under the Rural Rate Relief Scheme must be located within the boundaries of a rural settlement. We have a Rural Settlement List and maps available which show the boundaries of each settlement if you are not sure if your business property comes within one of them. Any business in the towns and villages of Crowland, Holbeach, Long Sutton, Pinchbeck, Spalding and Sutton Bridge will not be able to get help under the Rural Rate Relief Scheme as the populations in these areas are too large.

Hardship Relief

In exceptional circumstances the Council may grant relief to businesses suffering financial hardship. To qualify for the relief businesses must show:

- the ratepayer would sustain hardship if the authority did not do so; and
- it is reasonable for the Council to do so, having regard to the 'interests' of its council tax payers.

The 'interests' of council tax payers may go wider than direct financial interests. For example, where employment prospects in the area would be badly affected by a company going out of business, or where amenities of an area would be severely affected, for example, the closure of the only shop in a village.

To support their application businesses must supply recent accounts to confirm their financial circumstances.
