Hedgerows
How we provide this service
Information to enable compliance under the Hedgerow Regulations of 1997 and to give some advice on the planting of hedgerows is supported by Planning and Development, Conservation Team.
What to do to get this service
It is against the law to remove most countryside hedgerows without permission. Check with the District Council at least seven weeks before you intend to remove a hedgerow. February to August should ideally be avoided due to nesting birds which are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended).
If necessary, the District Council will provide you with a hedgerow application form. Please return it to the District Council, and they will assess the hedgerow. Either consent will be granted, or a hedgerow retention notice will be issued. There are processes of appeal in place if you disagree with the decision.
