Council property - enquiries

How we provide this service

Council property enquiries is supported by Property Services, Property.

All Councils have been set a target of raising the standard of all its properties by the year 2010 by the Government. This target, known as the Decent Homes Standard, is driving the Council's programme of modernisation in your homes.

In order to raise the standard of your home, a recent stock condition survey identified the following works are required:

- double glazed windows
- replacement kitchens
- replacement bathrooms
- re-roofing
- replacement heating systems.

It is likely that in the forthcoming years, your home will have one of these improvements undertaken.

The double glazing part of this survey is now complete, but has been replaced with the replacement door contract which will aim to have all properties fitted with new doors within the next five years. This will consist of the replacement of both front and rear doors, if both are present, with GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) doors.

Common Questions

If you're a tenant living in one of our properties, whether it be a flat, bungalow or house, you may have questions about your home that you'd love to know the answer to. These are the questions that we get asked the most frequently. If your question isn't here, please ring Customer Services and ask for Property Services.

Q. When will I have new doors fitted in my council home?
A. We are working through properties in age order over the next 5 years.

Q. When will I have a new kitchen and bathroom in my council home?
A. We have been upgrading these in bungalows over the past six years but we have started on houses and will be continuing with working on both, each year, working in age order.

Q. How will I know if any modernisation works are due to be carried out in my home?
A. We always write to tenants well in advance of any works being undertaken in or around their home. You may ring us here in Property Services and we will try our best to help you, by telling you if any work is planned for your home.

Q. I don't have any heating in my bedrooms. Could you install any?
A. We have carried out the bulk of improvements with partial heating, but if we have missed you and you don't have any heating in your bedrooms then please contact us.
