Licence - Animal Boarding

How we provide this service

Information about licences to operate a boarding animals business is supported by Community & Neighbourhood Services, Food Safety & Licensing.

Any person carrying out an animal boarding business for cats and/or dogs is required to obtain a licence from us.

What to do to get this service

Once a licence is issued, conditions will be attached to the licence to ensure the welfare of the animals; inspections will look at:

  • suitability of accommodation such as construction, size, temperature, lighting, ventilation and cleanliness;
  • that the animals are supplied with suitable food, drink, bedding material and exercise;
  • reasonable steps are taken to prevent and control the spread of disease;
  • appropriate steps are taken to protect animals in case of fire or other emergency;
  • a register is kept of all animals boarded at the establishment. The register should contain specified details.

There is a fee which must be paid at the time of making your application. Newly licensed premises are required to have a vet's inspection.

Download and complete an Animal Boarding Licence application form (PDF, 7KB) or a Home Boarding Licence application form (PDF, 7KB). Sign the form to confirm that you will pay the fees for the vet's inspection and enclose the necessary fee. These licences are renewed on a calendar year basis.

If you need further advice, contact the licensing team.
