Common Questions
Q. Are meetings open to the public?
A. Most official meetings are open to the public, but there may be items that are dealt with in private. Such items are defined in an Act of Parliament. If the Council or Committee wishes to discuss such an item in private it must first pass a resolution to exclude the public and press from the meeting.
Q. May a member of the public speak at a Committee meeting?
A. The Council generally does not permit members of the public to speak at Committee meetings. Although, you may lobby your local Councillor who may present points on your behalf. However, there are exceptions with both Cabinet and the Development Control Committee whereby public speaking is permitted, details of which can be accessed via the Public Speaking Scheme page.
Q. How do I know when a Committee meeting will be held?
A. The meeting timetable is drawn up well in advance for a full year at a time. A notice is placed on the notice board at the Council Offices about a week before a meeting takes place. Details of meeting dates can also be found on the Council's website via the Scheduled Meeting Dates page.
Q. Where do the meetings take place?
A. Meetings of the full Council are held in the Council Chamber at the Council's Priory Road offices. Other meetings are held in either the Council Chamber or in one of the meeting rooms below the Council Chamber. The venue will be shown on the meeting agenda.
