Census information

How we provide this service

Details of census information is supported by Assistant Chief Executive, Partnerships Team.

The Census is a count of all people and households and is the most complete source of information about the population that we have. The last Census was held on Sunday 29th April 2001. The next census is due to take place on Sunday 27th March 2011.

Preparations are already underway; an address list for all properties in the district is being compiled and Census address checkers are working within the area. The 2011 census is the first census that can be completed electronically via an online form over the internet.

The Census is conducted every 10 years and the information from it helps central and local Government, health authorities and many other organisations to target their resources more effectively. For example to plan housing, education, health and transport services.

Confidentiality:
Information on individual people is not released to any organisation or government department. Data collected is under embargo for 100 years and only total counts for population and other facts are available, rather than information on individuals.

The confidentiality of personal information is of paramount importance. Disclosure of personal Census information is an offence. The Office for National Statistics process the Census forms in secure conditions.

Measures are also taken to prevent inadvertent disclosure of information about individuals through the statistical results. For example, information will not be released for areas containing fewer than 100 households.
