How we provide this service

Advice on existing private tenancy is supported by Community & Neighbourhood Services, Community Housing.

What to do to get this service

If you are a tenant of a privately rented property and have spoken to your landlord about the problems you have with the physical condition of it but nothing is being done then we may be able to help depending on what the problem is.
You can telephone, write in or visit the council offices to tell us of your problems and if needed we can make a visit to take a look.

Common Questions

Q. What type of complaints are dealt with?

A. There is currently the Housing Health and Safety Rating System which we can enforce if the property is unfit for human habitation or hazards are identified.

Q. I'm not sure if my complaint is covered by the Housing Health and Safety Rating System?

A. Contact the council and ask for the private sector housing team and we can advise you. If the matter is serious we will contact your landlord to discuss getting the problem fixed.

Q. If I contact you my landlord might get upset and want to throw me out.

A. If the complaint is valid and you have already discussed the matter with the landlord they would need to follow the correct process to end your tenancy and aren't allowed to throw you out without good reason. If you have a concern then our 'housing dept' have people that can advise and assist you with the rules on this. The Citizens Advice Bureau can also offer advice.
