Sheltered housing
How we provide this service
Sheltered Housing is housing for elderly people and people with a disability who need accommodation on the ground floor.
We currently have 965 sheltered dwellings. They are located at 28 sites across the district and range from small groups of 10 to larger sites covering nearly 100. The dwellings include one and two bedroom bungalows, flats and flatlets.
Most sites have wardens that live on the site or close by. When the wardens are not on duty residents can get help though the emergency alarm system. This means that residents can get help and support any time they need it.
13 of the sites have community centres with active resident committees who arrange trips and organise a wide range of social activities.
We aim to provide a secure and safe environment for residents of sheltered housing which helps them to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. This service is supported by Housing, Operational.

Common Questions
Q. How is it paid for?
A. The cost of the Sheltered Housing Service is met by a service charge payable weekly by residents. The current support charge is £16.65 and £2.61 for sheltered property. Residents on low incomes can get help with their rent through the new Supporting People fund which has replaced housing benefit.
Q. What if I need alterations to my home?
A. Permanent alterations, such as grab rails, ramps and showers are known as ?adaptations?. If you are an elderly person or have a disability and think you may benefit from having an adaptation carried out at your home, we may be able to help. An Occupational Therapist will make an assessment of your needs before any decisions are made.
Q. What if I cannot look after my garden?
A. At the moment we are unable to offer you any assistance with your garden and ask you to look to family and friends for help. We are currently exploring options through our sheltered housing compacts and hope to be able to offer some assistance in the near future.
