Council House allocation

How we provide this service

When you are allocated a property you enter into a legal contract with the Council - this is called the Tenancy Agreement. This service is supported by Housing & Property Service Unit, Housing Operational.

What to do to get this service

If you are offered a property:

  • we will check to make sure that your circumstances haven't changed for example, that no rent or other debt is owed
  • you will have an opportunity to view the property and decide whether you want to accept it. If you refuse two offers which meet your stated choices, your application will be placed on a deferred list for 6 months, during which time no further offers will be made. You will be asked for your reasons for refusing the properties and we will check whether you want to reconsider your options
  • you are expected to make a decision as soon as possible
  • once the start date of the tenancy has been confirmed, occupation must be taken as soon as possible. Failure to do so will result in legal action being raised to recover the property.

You are expected to occupy your house as your main and permanent home. If you need to go away from your home for a long period please let us know. If you are not living at your home and you have not informed us the Council may begin legal action to evict you.

Common Questions

Q. Why have you allocated/not allocated this person a house?
A. All allocations are made in accordance with current Council policy based on a points system.

Q. Why have you allocated a single person a 3 bedroomed house?
A. No one is excluded from applying for any accommodation, unless it would result in overcrowding. Also historic building policies mean that matching property size to applicants is often difficult, if not impossible.

Q. Can I apply for a bungalow?
A. You can apply for a bungalow if you are over 60 years of age or if one of the applicants has a disability. If you have a disability you will need to fill in a medical assessment form which we will assess.

Q. When will the keys for the property you have offered me be ready?
A. In most cases we will give you a target date - but this is only a target date and may change if we need to carry out any more repairs.

Q. What will happen if I refuse the property you have offered me?
A. Applicants will normally be made two offers of suitable accommodation before their application is deferred for 6 months. Deferral will begin on the date that the second offer is refused. In addition, if you refuse a third reasonable offer, you may be asked to attend an interview with your Housing Officer to discuss your housing needs.
