Property alteration by tenant

How we provide this service

Tenants have the right to make improvements, alterations and additions to their home as long as they have written permission from us. We will not refuse permission unreasonably, but works must be carried out to a specified standard and we may inspect the work on completion. This service is supported by Housing & Property Service Unit, Construction Services.

Right to compensation for improvements

If you have received written permission and made improvements to your property, you may have the right to claim compensation when you move out.

Details of the right to compensation for improvements are set out in the leaflet, Your Right to Compensation for Improvements (new window) published by Communities and Local Government.

What to do to get this service

Please write to us, telling us as much as you can about the work you would like to carry out. In most cases a Repairs Inspector will visit you to discuss the work and will confirm whether or not you can go ahead with it. We will also write to you confirming our decision. You may also need to get other necessary approvals, for example, planning permission or building regulations approval.
