The earth-sheltered building in Hoddins Way, Long Sutton is the office of chartered architects SEArch (Sustainable Ecological Architecture Ltd), a local practice operating exclusively in the field of environmentally responsible development.
Earlier this year, SEArch in collaboration with SHDC Building Control was awarded “Best Sustainable Development” at the East Midlands Local Authority Building Control Excellence Awards. This nationally shortlisted project will learn how it has faired against 10 other shortlisted projects from across the country on 1st November at The Brewery, London.
The office is an exemplary building demonstrating low carbon working practices, consuming a fraction of the energy of more conventional buildings. The building is naturally heated and naturally ventilated, with no central heating and no mechanical ventilation necessary.
South Holland District Council Building Control Officers played a crucial role in guiding SEArch through the building guidance documents. From the partnering process, both council officers and SEArch staff have exchanged knowledge for mutual benefit.
In response to the experience, the council has hailed the development as a breakthrough in building design that will serve as an example for others to follow.
Councillor Malcolm Chandler, SHDC Portfolio Holder for Building Control, said: “This is an innovative design demonstrating how low carbon buildings can be delivered, especially in these times of escalating fuel costs. It’s a great demonstration of sustainable development.”
Dr Jeremy Harrall, Managing Director of SEArch, said: “The specialist knowledge and proactive work ethic of SHDC Building Control Officers is highly regarded in the district and was crucial in securing such a high performance from the building.”
