Hundreds of well-wishers welcomed the One Show favourite to the Grade II 15th century building where he was treated to drinks, sausage rolls and the Hall Cafe’s speciality home-made Victoria sponge cake.
Matt, whose pedal power transport for the journey is a rickshaw, and his crew spent about half an hour in Spalding having travelled down from Lincoln before heading toward Crowland and the day’s final destination of Peterborough.
He thanked hall staff for the “lovely but brief caravan pitch”, spending most of his time recuperating from his exertions and preparing for the journey ahead.
Museum Officer, Julia Knight said: “It was fabulous to see so many staff and visitors to welcome Matt to Ayscoughfee. We were really pleased to see him and to support such a fantastic cause.
“He was obviously very tired but you have to admire his willpower and endurance. To ride all that way on a rickshaw is some achievement.”
Matt was due at BBC Television Centre in West London sometime Friday evening.
