Ayscoughfee Gardens

Open from dawn until dusk everyday of the year, Ayscoughfee Gardens have something to offer all ages!

Ayscoughfee Gardens

The formal gardens beautifully compliment historic Ayscoughfee Hall, featuring a Yew Tree walk dating back to the 1720s. The Ornamental Lake is headed by a War Memorial designed by the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, while hidden to the rear of the gardens is the Ice House which originally served the Hall's kitchens.

The Peace Garden offers a more contemporary theme, while the Herb Garden features a display of the plants that would have been used in the kitchens of Ayscoughfee Hall.

For the more active, facilities include: hard surface tennis courts, a bowling green and putting green. Tickets for these are available from the Pavillion.

The Gardens also houses a children's playground and refreshments can be purchased at the Pavillion Cafe, open from March - October inclusive.

Ayscoughfee Garden Project

South Holland District Council is working with NAU Archaeology to investigate the historical 'footprint' of Ayscoughfee Hall Gardens.

A desk based survey has been completed drawing together all known information about the gardens, and geophysical and topographical surveys have also been carried out. Digging began on 28 January and started with the well that was discovered during the recent refurbishment at the back of the building; locations for other trenches are to be decided (there are no trenches intended for the bowling green). It is expected that this phase will last until early March.

The project is funded through the Leader+ organisation and will include opportunities for school children and people from the district to find out about the dig itself and the work involved in the archaeological process. The council is also asking for volunteers from the community to help show people what is happening, and to participate in the digs.

Primary and secondary schools are being encouraged to visit Ayscoughfee on set days and times to participate in a number of activities associated with the project. Contact Dawn Freeman on 01775 764475 if you represent a school and would like to come along and join in the fun. Places are limited!
