Tell us a little bit about your job and what it involves I work in the Finance Department. I assist the Senior Accountant and deal primarily with areas involving capital and VAT. I also help with the Estimates and Final accounts.
What do you like about working in Local Government/what are the benefits? All the people are really friendly; you work in a modern office with a range of people of different ages and experience. There are always opportunities to either gain more experience, for example with training, or move into a different area within the council if you become unhappy. You are always encouraged to do well and improve your personal development to the level you are happiest with. If you want to go far within the area you work the council will fully support you. Working in a council with all the different service areas gives work a variety and adds interest. In addition the council provides the opportunity for you to be part of an excellent pension scheme.
What attracted you to working at a local authority? After studying politics I knew I wanted to be in an area of local government. I wanted to be in an environment which would enable me to go far in a career where I would be encouraged and supported to reach my goals. Working at a council gives you the opportunity for a life time career with no possibility of redundancy and full support for training opportunities. The Flexitime system is also very appealing as working hours are flexible and overtime is rewarded. (The council pay very well especially when you are starting on the career ladder and increments are frequent when training and first starting out.)
What are your career aspirations? I am currently studying the AAT qualification and I am part of the Leadership Development Programme. I would like to go on to study the CIPFA qualification which will enable me to become a qualified accountant. I hope to become a senior accountant within the finance department and hopefully continue to work my way up. I intend to reach a level where I feel challenged and motivated but I am still able to enjoy achievement in my role to keep up morale and determination. |
