Vernatts Local Nature Reserve

This parcel of land serves to protect a variety of unusual plants and animals in a mixture of habitats, right in the heart of Spalding. It is owned and managed by South Holland District Council for the benefit of both wildlife and people. It offers a green space in which visitors can relax, learn and enjoy the natural surroundings. The reserve has been used as a subject for artists, students and school pupils.

How did it start?

A Visitor's Code

The reserve is found at the north end of Spalding, Lincolnshire. You can walk to the reserve along footpaths from three places:

  1. From the Royal Mailcart Public House on Pinchbeck Road
  2. From Sharp's Bridge, Pinchbeck Road
  3. From Chiltern Drive Playing Field off West Elloe Avenue.

The site was first recognised for its nature conservation value in 1990 when the disused railway line, shooting ground and fishing lake were left to grow wild. A group of local volunteers then started to record the wildlife and to manage the reserve which in 1994 was purchased by the South Holland District Council.

In 1999 the reserve was formally recognised by English Nature and designated as a 'Local Nature Reserve' under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act, 1949.

It is now managed by the Council's Nature Conservation Officer
While in the nature reserve it is important to follow the countryside code. This includes:
  • Keep to the footpaths.
  • Keep dogs on leads and clean up after them.
  • Do not pick or disturb any plant or animal.
  • No fishing.
  • Do not light fires.
  • Take all litter home or to a bin.
