Community Engagement Strategy

Community engagement is an important factor in our approach to communication, corporate planning and community leadership. We already engage with people in many different ways and at many different levels but we want to make sure that all sections of the community have a voice and have opportunities to participate and be involved in decisions that affect them. Our plans for this are based on what local people have already told us, including those who typically are harder to reach or for whom engagement is difficult. Now we need to know, have we captured these views correctly in our proposed strategy and how we plan to implement it?

Please take  few minutes to complete our Consultation Survey

We want all citizens to feel that the local public services act on their concerns and describe themselves as:

  • Well informed about the Council and its services and how to contact their elected member and how to make a complaint;
  • Satisfied that they have meaningful and worthwhile opportunities to express their views to the Council; and
  • Able to influence local issues which impact on their quality of life.

The strategy includes an action plan that sets out how we will overcome the main challenges to effective engagement in South Holland and also what we will do to promote engaged and empowered communities. This includes:

  • Providing information: so that people are aware of what is going on and can make informed choices and get involved if they wish;
  • Consulting and encouraging participation: for example on local priorities and service improvement or when policies and plans are being formed and there are choices about options and details; and
  • Empowering individuals and communities: including equipping communities to develop and implement their own community plans.

The formal consultation period will end on 23rd December 2008. However, the strategy will never be 'fixed in stone' and comments will be welcome at any time. Send your comments to: James Edwards, Partnerships and Consultation Officer, jedwards2@sholland.gov.uk or phone 01775 761161.
