The census is an estimate of the population that is carried out every ten years.  Census day was Sunday 27th March 2011.

The census is important as it is used to estimate the population and number of households in each area. The results are used to allocate funding and plan services such as transport, housing, healthcare and education in each area. It is the only time every person and household is counted  across the UK.

Results from the census will only become available in 2012-13 as the vast amount of information that was collected has to be quality assured and validated to ensure accuracy.
