The village name arises from the addition of "St Edmund" (King and Martyr) to the original name of Sutton. The church, built in 1795, is the only one in the County with this patron Saint.
The Greenwich Meridian passes through the Parish, which is characterised by four near parallel straight "Gates" or roads that run for a length of 5miles at a bearing of about 20deg. East. Cross Road joins two of these, where the New Century Fun Field is to be found.
The nucleus of the village lies along the central part of Broadgate, where both the fine and original Georgian church and the spacious modern village hall are located.
The Hamlet of Throckenholt along South Eau Bank, Sutton St Edmund's Common, Tydd St Mary's Fen and parts of Gedney Hill, all form part of this widely spread Parish.
There is a caravan and camping site in Broadgate and an eighteen-hole golf course and restaurant at nearby Gedney Hill.
Good fishing may be enjoyed in the North Level Main Drain near the interesting three-way bridge at Cloughs Cross where the road leads into Cambridgeshire.
