Beware: Identity Fraud In Our Area

We have received some worrying calls from customers telling us that people are phoning residents about helping them obtain council tax reductions and asking for bank details in order to do this...

These callers are not SHDC officers and we want to warn our residents NOT to give out their bank details under any circumstances.

The callers are telling residents that they have overpaid their council tax and are asking for bank details with the promise of a refund for the alleged overpayment.

We want our residents to be aware of this issue, so they do not put their personal details at risk. It will help to note that we would never ring a resident to ask for their bank details to issue a refund. If an overpayment had been made, and a refund is due, we would either refund the money via BACS if it had been paid by direct debit, or a cheque would be issued to the bill payer's address..

If members of the public receive a call like this they should simply hang up. If they can, they should dial 1471 afterwards and make a note of the number that called them. Then they should call us on 01775 761161 to alert us that a call has been received. They should also report the incident to Lincolnshire Police by calling 01522 532222.

If anyone has a query about their council tax band they can contact us on 01775 761161 or visit the Valuation Office Agency website or contact them by phone on 0845 602 1507  - the advice is free.
