Budgetary Announcements - Small Business Properties 2010-11

The Government have announced some measures aimed at helping small businesses.

Empty Property Rates

The Government will legislate to temporarily increase the threshold at which an empty property becomes liable for business rates. For the financial year 2010-11, empty properties with a rateable value of less than £18,000 will be exempt from empty property rates.

Small Business Rate Relief

The current restriction requiring properties to be in the rating list on 1 April in order to qualify for small business rate relief in that year is to be removed. This will allow businesses that occupy (qualifying) properties entered in the rating list after 1 April to be entitled to relief from the date the property is entered in the list and not waiting until the following April to qualify.
