Garden waste applications snapped up

Applications for SHDC's garden waste collection service continue to be snapped up, with only a few hundred spaces remaining.

Garden waste

The two-year pilot scheme was launched back in February and already over 2,000 households have signed up to the service (around 80 per cent of the available spaces).

Collections got underway in April and a number of residents have expressed their satisfaction with the service, which sees garden waste regularly collected from brown bins or paper sacks.

There is still time for people to sign up with anyone interested encouraged to do so soon.

Cllr Roger Gambba-Jones, South Holland District Council's portfolio holder for waste management, said: "As we anticipated, the scheme has proved extremely popular, with a very high take up rate within the pilot areas and an ever increasing number of people registering their interest in participating.

"Several residents have told us that they find the service invaluable, particularly at this time of year, when everything is growing quickly and needs regular trimming to keep it looking its best.

"We believe that the service represents excellent value for money and is much more cost effective than having to travel to a recycling centre to dispose of garden waste, which can often involve a lengthy wait in a queue of cars."

The service now covers a wide area of homes within the district. These include parts of the following towns and village: Spalding, Holbeach, Crowland, Long Sutton, Sutton Bridge, Donington, Gosberton, Quadring, Deeping St Nicholas, Cowbit, Pinchbeck, Weston, Moulton, Surfleet and Whaplode.

Residents within the garden waste collection areas are invited to sign up for an initial charge of £49 for 24 collections a year and an initial one off charge of £15 to cover extras including delivery and lease of the bins.

Residents wishing to participate on an ad hoc basis or those living in a property which isn't suitable for a wheelie bin can purchase paper sacks.
