Sheltered housing is provided for people over 62, or those under 62 who would benefit from living in the communal environment that Sheltered Housing provides.
The cost of the Sheltered Housing Service is met by a service charge payable weekly by residents. This charge may vary according to the facilities available at each location. Residents on low incomes may get help with their rent through housing benefit.
Sheltered Housing is run on an intensive landlord basis, with Sheltered Housing Officers available to advise on all housing related matters. Each property is equipped with an emergency pull cord system which is monitored by the Alarm Call Monitoring centre. This service is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Some of the schemes have community centres with active resident committees who arrange trips and organise a wide range of social activities. In addition we have 12 guestrooms located across the district at 10 of the schemes, these are available for residents family and friends to stay short term at an additional cost per night.
We aim to provide a secure and safe environment for residents of sheltered housing which helps them to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Permanent alterations, such as grab rails, ramps and showers are known as adaptations. If you are an elderly person or have a disability and think you may benefit from having an adaptation carried out at your home, we may be able to help. An Occupational Therapist will make an assessment of your needs before any decisions are made.
How we provide the Lifeline service
We also provide a Lifeline [725kb] for vulnerable people.
This service provides back up assistance if an emergency occurs anywhere around your home at the touch of a button.
The benefits of this service include:
- increased security
- help and support in an emergency
- peace of mind for you and your family
- continued independence in your own home.
It is an alternative to sheltered housing for those wishing to stay in their own homes.
Both services can receive additional equipment including the supply and fit of a key safe at an additional cost.
