Council owned land and premises is supported by Customer, Legal and Member Services, Member Services.
What to do to get this service
Contact Legal Services. We have computerised records of all of our land, and can often locate the plot very quickly. We are also able to look into rights and restrictions over our land by inspecting the Council's ownership documents.

If we do not own the land, you can do a land search at HM Land Registry. Go to the site for information and forms.
What do I need to provide?
We need to know the boundaries of the land in question and if possible the full postal address. The boundaries are often difficult to describe precisely over the telephone without looking together at a detailed map (which can be arranged for personal visitors). We should be able to tell from a telephone enquiry whether the Council owns land nearby, but for a more precise answer, a plan showing the exact boundaries of the land can be submitted by fax or post.

Q. Can I buy the land from you?
A. If the land is not required by the Council, then we will consider selling it. For more information go to Applications to purchase adjacent land
Q. If the land isn't owned by the Council, can you tell me who owns it?
A. No - we can only tell you if the Council owns the land. If the land is registered land (property that has been sold/bought since December 1989 must be registered) then you will be able to find out who owns it from HM Land Registry. If it is not registered ask neighbouring landowners if they know. If the land is subject to development proposals the Head of Planning will be able to provide information on recent planning applications received.
Q. Is there a charge for this information?
A. Not at present.
Q. How long will it take to find out the information I have requested?
A. This will be dependent upon the demand and also upon the need for a detailed plan to be submitted to the Council. Provided all necessary details have been provided to us, then a telephone response can normally be given within one working day. In certain cases. depending on the complexity of land ownership in the area, reference to the Council's deeds may be required in which case the enquiry may take longer.
